Come September 20, Gooding Christie’s will be in Long Beach, CA, to present the Stan Lucas Collection Auction at Lucas Classic Tires.
The company is advertising the sale as, “Nearly 100 lots of Antique, Brass, and Classic Era cars, motorcycles, and automobilia from the Stan Lucas Estate will be offered at no reserve during the live auction.”
No looky-loos however, as attendance to the sale is exclusive to registered bidders and approved media.
Still, they’ll run it across their YouTube channel starting at 10 a.m. PDT, Saturday, September 20.
This is one of the few sales you’ll see in Southern California, despite the area’s car culture and deep pockets. But it has the perfect storm for the company to pull off a successful sale: collector with ties to the area (Lucas Classic Tire has been in business since 1957); impressive collection with some notoriety (Stan Lucas and his team showed at Pebble Beach); and a fairly quiet weekend on the auction calendar to focus on this sale.
A few lots that caught my eye while clicking through the catalog include Lot 50, a 1930 Bentley Speed Six tourer (estimate: $1,750,000–$2,250,000), that according to the catalog has never been offered for public sale before (with known ownership since new) and has an original fabric body. The highest estimated lot from the group is Lot 71, a 1934 Duesenberg Model J disappearing top convertible, offered at no reserve as the rest of the collection is and with an estimate of $3m–$3.5m. We’ll see if it gets there or goes beyond someone’s best guess.
We’ll see how it turns out come end of day, September 20. Did you have a favorite lot while scrolling/flipping through the catalog?
