Chad Allan Tyson
Chad Allan Tyson hails originally from Cheyenne, WY.
After a freshman year at the University of Wyoming in the engineering program with plans to become a mechanical engineer, Chad realized he needed something other than theory, student life and essays. He opted for a more formalized education in the trades then enrolling at the original WyoTech campus in Laramie, WY. From October 2004 to September 2005, he did well to even excelling in several courses — just don’t ask him to be your top-notch TIG welder.
After graduating from WyoTech, he took a job at a hot rod shop under the guidance of Jorg Chisholm. Not long after Chisholm closed his shop and sold the land to the local refinery, Chad took an entry-level job at the Cheyenne Ford dealer. A brief spell as a lube tech, followed by an apprenticeship under a Ford master tech, and Chad was off on his own in flat-rate land. He did well, well enough to keep it up for a few years until the bending, stooping, reaching and aching wasn’t worth the paycheck.
Fast forward a few years and Chad Allan Tyson moved to the Portland metro area
He headed up the pocket price guide at SCM for a few years, until Chad Taylor got hired on and then they shared responsibility until Tyson’s departure from the magazine in June 2020.
He’s continued keeping his ear to the ground of the collector-car world, as a contributor to Linkage magazine’s auction coverage and manning the booth at the Classic Car Update YouTube channel.
Chad Taylor
Chad Taylor grew up around mechanical items of all kinds from the farm machinery used on one of his grandmothers 20-acre farm to the project cars stashed in his Packard connoisseur of a grandfather’s garage. With his father, three uncles, a brother and cousins as equally car-obsessed as the patriarch of the family, automotive talk never waned at family events gatherings.
A bit of a contrarian, Chad also loved cars but went a different route. Rather than fawning over the American classics of his family, his favorites were European. Making it no surprise that his first job in the auto industry at 20 years old was at the local Ferrari dealership, washing and cleaning the Maranello brands latest models.
After five years, a streak of luck saw Chad fall into a new path — automotive media. He landed a job at Sports Car Marketmagazine, tracking auction results and classic car values before being encouraged to take a swing writing. It was at thatmagazine that he also experienced the pinnacle events of the classic automotive world in Scottsdale, AZ, Amelia Island, FL and Pebble Beach, CA. Not to mention a couple trips to the aftermarket mecca known as SEMA.
From there, Chad would follow podcast partner Pickering and his former executive editor Chester Allen to Linkage magazine, continuing to write and track classic car prices while also handling subscriptions and working to increase circulation.
Everything has now come full circle for Chad. He has been a freelance automotive writer and recently returned to the Ferrari dealership where it all started, adding new cars back into the mix that had been classic heavy. Those combined with the fun being had at the Autoshift, Chad has stayed fully immersed in the automotive world he can’t get enough of.
